The cooling system of a diesel engine plays a critical role in ensuring its smooth and efficient operation. If the system deteriorates, it can lead to serious issues such as overheating, reduced performance, and even engine failure. One of the main causes of deterioration is the buildup of scale inside the cooling system. This scale reduces the internal volume of the system, increases water flow resistance, and impairs heat transfer, which in turn causes the engine temperature to rise. As the temperature increases, more scale forms, creating a dangerous cycle that accelerates damage. Additionally, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause the engine oil to oxidize, leading to carbon deposits on vital components like piston rings, cylinder walls, and valves. These deposits increase friction and wear, further reducing the engine’s lifespan. To prevent these problems, it's essential to follow proper maintenance practices when using the cooling system: 1. **Use Soft Water**: Whenever possible, use soft water like rain or melted snow as coolant. Tap water from rivers, springs, or wells is usually hard, containing minerals that can form scale when heated. If you must use hard water, boil it first, let it settle, and then use the surface water. In emergencies, clean, uncontaminated soft water can be used as a temporary solution. 2. **Maintain Proper Coolant Level**: Ensure that the coolant level in the upper water tank is at least 8mm below the inlet pipe to avoid overflow and ensure proper circulation. 3. **Correct Water Addition Method**: Never add cold water to an overheated engine. Instead, unload the engine, allow the temperature to drop, and then slowly add water while the engine is running. If the engine loses all its coolant during operation, do not add water immediately, as this can cause thermal stress and damage to internal components. Wait until the engine has cooled down naturally before refilling. 4. **Control Engine Temperature**: Always warm up the engine to above 60°C before starting work. For tractors, the water temperature should be at least 40°C before starting idle. Once operating normally, keep the coolant temperature between 80-90°C, and never exceed 98°C. 5. **Check Belt Tension**: The belt should sag about 10-12mm when pressed with 29.4–49N of force in the middle. Adjust the tension by loosening the generator bracket bolts and repositioning the pulley if necessary. 6. **Inspect Water Pump Leaks**: Check the drain hole under the water pump cover for leaks. A leak of no more than 6 drops per 3 minutes is acceptable. If there’s excessive leakage, replace the water seal. 7. **Lubricate Bearings**: After every 50 hours of operation, lubricate the water pump bearings with grease to ensure smooth operation and extend their life. 8. **Clean Scale Regularly**: Clean the cooling system thoroughly after approximately 1000 hours of engine operation to remove accumulated scale and maintain optimal performance. By following these steps, you can significantly improve the efficiency and longevity of your diesel engine’s cooling system. Regular maintenance not only prevents costly repairs but also ensures safer and more reliable operation.
