Cabbage lettuce varieties that are mid to late maturing and highly cold-resistant should be selected for cultivation in solar greenhouses. These varieties are well-suited for the temperature fluctuations typical of winter growing conditions. The optimal planting period for solar greenhouse cultivation is from mid-November to late January, with harvesting taking place between mid-January and early March.
For seedling preparation, use fertile sandy loam soil that has been leveled after thinning. Apply 100 kg of well-composted manure per 10 square meters, along with 0.5 kg of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and mix thoroughly. After leveling the surface, water the area and allow it to absorb before sowing. Dry seeds are typically used for sowing, but germinated seeds can also be used. When using dry seeds, treat them with 0.3% chlorothalonil wettable powder by weight. Avoid leaving the treated seeds standing for too long. For germination, soak the seeds in warm water (20°C) for 6–7 hours, then wrap them in a cloth bag and place them in a warm environment (20°C). Rinse them once daily with water, and they should sprout within 2–3 days. Sow on a sunny, windless day, using 3–5 grams of seeds per square meter. After sowing, cover the seeds with a thin layer of fine soil, about 3–5 mm thick.
Before planting, prepare the soil by incorporating 5,000 kg of composted organic fertilizer and 30–40 kg of compound fertilizer. Deep plowing should be done first, followed by making the beds flat. A plastic film can be placed over the beds to help retain heat and moisture.
When transplanting, space the plants 40 cm apart in rows and 30 cm between plants. Water the beds before transplanting and add more soil around the roots. Planting can be done in open trenches or by digging holes, and after planting, the trenches should be filled with water and leveled.
After planting, maintain daytime temperatures between 20–24°C and nighttime temperatures above 10°C. During the initial growth phase, cultivate the soil 1–2 times to keep it loose. Once the seedlings have settled, gradually reduce the temperature to 15–20°C during the day. Water lightly 7–10 days after transplanting, and apply a small amount of chemical fertilizer at a rate of about 10 kg per acre. Continue cultivating and managing the seedlings as needed. About 15 days after transplanting, when the rosette leaves have developed and the heart leaves begin to close, apply 15–20 kg of compound fertilizer or ammonium nitrate. Another application of fertilizer is recommended during the ball stage.
Watering should be done sparingly during winter to avoid excessive moisture or high ground temperatures. Once the plants enter the ball stage, ensure even watering to prevent cracking or splitting of the heads. Stop watering 3–5 days before harvest to improve storage quality and flavor.
