With a total planting area of 150,000 mu and an annual output exceeding 150,000 tons, the county's grape industry is a key economic driver, featuring over 150 varieties across three main categories: wine, fresh consumption, and dual-purpose. However, as the industry has expanded, challenges such as increasing cases of downy mildew, skin rot, and declining sugar content, flavor, and color have emerged.
To tackle these issues, local agricultural authorities conducted extensive research and identified that excessive and improper use of fertilizers, driven by the pursuit of higher yields, was a major contributing factor. In response, the county has adopted a science-based approach, promoting soil testing and customized fertilization techniques.
Huailai is now positioning itself as a leading grape and wine production region in China. By integrating scientific development concepts with practical farming methods, the county is focusing on providing balanced nutrition for grapes through targeted fertilization. This effort not only enhances grape quality but also supports the long-term growth and optimization of the industry.
To support this initiative, the county has introduced a soil testing and formula fertilization project, established a first-class laboratory, and developed standardized fertilization plans. These efforts are backed by the construction of a fertilizer plant with a total investment of 8.6 million yuan, ensuring the sustainability of agricultural practices.
Currently, the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Bureau is conducting soil surveys in key grape-growing areas, planning to set up 30 test points across 10 regions. The goal is to develop region-specific formulas that balance chemical fertilizers, organic matter, and micronutrients, ultimately boosting both grape yield and quality while fostering a healthier, more sustainable grape industry.
