"Posen" is a newly introduced blackberry variety, known for its strong adaptability, early maturity, and excellent flavor. It was imported from the United States by the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The variety was officially recognized by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Agriculture and Forestry in December 2006 and is now being actively promoted in Nanjing.
This thorny shrub has a sprawling growth habit with small but numerous thorns, making it difficult to manage without proper pruning. The plant is relatively large, with alternate leaves that have thorns along the petioles and veins. The flowers are bisexual, white in color, self-pollinating, and fall off easily after fruiting.
The ripe berries are purplish-red and oblong in shape, with an average weight of about 5.99 grams, making it a large-fruited variety. The taste is sweet, slightly tart, and aromatic, offering a refreshing flavor. The soluble solids content ranges between 8.50% and 11.50%, with a soluble sugar content of 6.35%. This makes it ideal for both fresh consumption and processing.
For best quality, the fully ripe fruits should be consumed or processed immediately after harvest. At room temperature, eight mature fruits can be stored for 2-3 days. As an early-maturing variety, "Posen" thrives in slightly acidic soils, is drought-tolerant, and can withstand low temperatures down to -15°C. However, it is sensitive to heavy soils and poor drainage.
One thing to note is that the ripening period of the fruits on the same cluster is not uniform, so it's recommended to harvest them in stages and batches to ensure optimal quality and yield. Overall, "Posen" is a promising variety that offers both agricultural and commercial potential for growers in suitable regions.
