Stephanitis scott. is a hemiptera Meliidae insect, widely distributed, and is a major pest of Azalea flowers. Its host plants, Du Fu and Ma Zu Mu, seriously affected the growth, reproduction and ornamental value of the two genera flowers.
Symptoms of Severe Infestation The crest of the cuckoo is mainly caused by nymphs and adults. The leaves of the host plants absorb sap and excrete fecal matter. The back of the leaves is rust-yellow. Needle-like white spots appear on the front of the leaves. In severe cases, the entire leaves become pale and waning. Photosynthesis of plants results in the slow growth of plants, early defoliation, and reduced ornamental value.
2 Morphological characteristics Adult insects small and flat, about 3.4mm long, about 2.0mm wide, small head, brown, compound eyes large and sudden; antennae 4 sections, the longest section 3; pronotum developed, with a reticular pattern , extend forward to cover the head, extend back to cover the small scutellum, both sides protruded thin round sheet of side back; wing membrane is transparent, dark brown veins, front wings covered with a reticular pattern, two The middle wings of the forewings showed a clear "X" pattern; the females had a complete abdomen and a spindle shape; the male had a small belly with a long oval shape. Egg white milky, about 0.52mm long, about 0.18mm wide, was banana-shaped, the top is a bag mouth, the end slightly curved. A total of 5 instar nymphs, mature nymph body flat, about 1.96mm, width of about 0.95mm, the development of the chest, wing buds obvious, body dark brown, compound eye developed, red. The head, chest, and abdomen all have spinous processes. There are three heads with isosceles triangles, one compound eye, two pairs of thoracodorsal backs, and one back of the second, fourth, fifth, and seventh quarters of the abdomen. .
3 The law of occurrence
7 to 10 generations occurred in 1 year, and adults and nymphs were allowed to overwinter in litter, weeds or rhizosphere topsoil. If the climate is warm, the overwintering phenomenon is not obvious and it can be seen almost all year round. In late March each year, adults and nymphs start their activities. By mid-April, the first generation of nymphs will occur. From June to September, the largest amount of nymphs will occur. The most serious damage will occur. The egg period is 7 to 15 days, the nymph period is 16 to 23 days, and the average period of 1 generation is 28 to 30 days. The generation overlap is severe. The newly hatched and moulted nymphs were white, and the body color gradually deepened. The nymphs are strongly clustered and often cluster around the back and main veins of the leaves to suck and harm. The adult larvae became pinkish white when they were newly emerged. They gradually turned dark brown after 2 hours, and they were not good at flying. They laid eggs two days after emergence. Eggs are produced in the leaf tissue next to the main vein of the host's back. A few occur on the side veins and main veins and are covered with brown jelly. High temperature, dry weather, the most suitable for this pest.
4 Control methods
4.1 Manual hunting Because of its clustering nature, it is not toxic to the human body. Therefore, when a small amount of pests occur on potted azaleas, they can be killed by hand.
4.2 Landscaping measures The litter and weeds in the nursery are all potential wintering sites. At the end of the fall, sweeping the leaves and timely cultivating and weeding can eliminate a large number of overwhelming insect sources. Selecting plantlets without pests can also reduce the occurrence of pests.
4.3 Chemical Control Pest control is a quick and effective method when pests are severe. Can be used 10% cypermethrin EC 1000 times or 40% omethoate EC or 50% PCL 2000 times, 2.5% KF EC 2500 to 3000 times, 10% imidacloprid WP 1500 times, various Medications should be used alternately with good control.
4.4 Preservation and use of natural enemies The natural enemies of the cuckoo are grasshoppers, spiders, and ants, and grasshoppers are the dominant species. A potted azalea has 4 to 5 grasshoppers, which can reduce the density of the population, without the need for control. Therefore, when a pest occurs, it is necessary to pay attention to the type and quantity of natural enemies to be investigated. If any predatory natural enemies such as grasshoppers are found, pesticides should be used little or no to protect natural enemies and control insect pests.
