In sub-Saharan Africa, malaria is a common and widespread disease and the number one killer of children under the age of five. However, expensive anti-malaria drugs make it difficult for ordinary people in the region to care. The Ministry of Public Health and Health of Kenya announced that Kenkin’s hospitals and pharmacies have begun selling antimalarial drugs at subsidized prices that are significantly lower than their original prices.

According to Kenya’s “National Daily” on the 27th, adult doses of antimalarial medicines will be reduced from the original 600 Kenyan shillings (1 US dollar to 80 Kenyan shillings) to 40 Kenyan shillings per dose. The drug is reduced to 10 Kenyan shillings per dose.

Ken Wembhiou Mogo, Minister of Public Health and Health of Kenya, said at the launching ceremony of the "affordable medical activities" that anti-malarial drugs with subsidized prices will enable patients to afford effective antimalarial medicines on the one hand. Medicines can reduce their economic burden, and at the same time, the artemisinin comprehensive treatment of malaria can be popularized as the most effective antimalarial method so that patients can receive timely treatment.

Mogo also reminds all pharmaceutical distributors not to sell the invalid antimalarials that are prohibited by the World Health Organization.

According to reports, Kenya’s sale of antimalarial drugs at subsidized prices is part of the Global Fund’s “Prevention and Treatment of AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria”.

The Global Fund is an international public/private partnership project. Since its establishment in 2002, it has provided cooperation of governments, civil society, private companies, and related communities with 9.3 billion U.S. dollars for 572 projects in 144 countries and regions.
