Officials at U.S. General Mills Food Company stated that the U.S. food industry is not yet ready to accept genetically modified wheat because consumers are cautious about genetically modified products.

Ron Olson, vice president of grain business at General Mills Foods, said that although wheat plantings in the United States continue to fall, the food industry is not accounting for wheat prices. He said that the United States can increase the import of Canadian spring wheat to meet domestic demand.

Although biotechnology companies such as Monsanto and Swiss Syngenta have worked hard for many years, GM wheat is still stuck in promotion because consumers' resistance to genetically modified foods makes it difficult for food companies to accept such products.

In 2004, Meng Shandu shelved the development of herbicide-resistant transgenic wheat. Swiss Syngenta has been studying low-key genetically modified spring wheat that is resistant to disease, but earlier this year it also stated that the company would not continue to promote GM wheat research and development projects without the support of major food companies.

Olson said that Syngenta needs to prioritize enhancing wheat's nutrition or provide other features that cater to consumers' interests in order to overcome market resistance.
