Tower Semiconductor, an Israeli foundry, announced that it has partnered with CMT Medical Technologies, a provider of medical X-ray imaging systems, to develop medical X-ray detectors. The detectors developed by both parties will be used in X-ray photography, cardiovascular photography, mammography and similar fields; such large-size detectors are usually produced on 8-inch wafers and require high yields. The first flat-panel detectors are expected to ship in 2009; the two companies point out that the CMOS image sensing technology used in the newly developed X-ray detectors will be much better than the prior art. "The partnership with CMT is a good opportunity for Tower to move its technology innovations into real-world product strategies," said Avi Strum, general manager of CMOS image sensors and non-volatile memory products at Tower Semiconductor; and Russell, CEO of the company. Ellwanger also pointed out that by combining CMT's market experience with Tower's wafer technology, the two parties hope to share this $500 million market pie in 2010.
