Thanks to the convenience of virtual reality technology, Sutter Health now has more than 100 doctors wearing Google Glass for patients.

In the past three years, Sutter Health's doctors have received more than 175,000 patients who have come to see a doctor with the help of Google Glass. The doctor wears AR glasses to receive the patient. The entire medical treatment process is transmitted in real time through the camera and the network, and a recorder on the other end of the network views the doctor-patient interaction and records.

“My recorder is called Raoul. He is responsible for entering information into our electronic medical system and observing the entire interactive process. He can ask questions in detail.” Dr. Chen explained. The recorder plays the role of a virtual assistant, watching and listening to the entire process of receiving the patient.

The first time the device was used, the recorder helped Dr. Chen to realize the potential value of the service. At that time, patients came to see a doctor, claiming that they not only had back pain, shoulder pain, but also chest pain.

“This is a typical story of a busy doctor. I am worried about my patient's chest pain. I am worried that he may have heart disease. Then the patient is examined, the heart rate is heard, the recorder is recording at the same time, and the process is displayed on Google glasses. He told me: 'Hey, Dr. Chen, the patient mentioned his shoulder pain, and you didn't check it out.' I quickly said to the patient, oh, yes. In addition to helping doctors make better decisions, using Google Glass also makes them more efficient. Doctors don't have to spend two hours doing medical records after the day-to-day work, which leaves a lot of time. "As of now, this is indeed a very good experience. I use it with patients, the acceptance rate is 97%." Dr. Chen said. “Over the years, whenever I think about innovation, I always ask myself, 'How do patients respond?' They always surprise me. Frankly speaking, they are always more advanced than me. Each doctor saves up to two hours a day, which is a great efficiency improvement for a large organization like Sutter Health. Dr. Chen said that the organization has 24 hospitals in Northern California and Hawaii, more than 5,000 doctors and 55,000 employees, and treats more than 3 million patients every year.

Google Glass helps doctors eliminate burnout by giving doctors more leisure time. "This phenomenon is called 'burnout' and is an element that we are very concerned about." Dr. Chen said. “In the United States, the proportion of clinicians’ burnout is quite high. In different departments, 10-60% of doctors think they have burnout. In individual departments, this ratio is even more than 60%.”

This is the vision of Augmedix co-founder Ian Shakil. He graduated from Stanford Business School in 2012. A friend who works at Google allows him to experience prototypes before Google Glass goes on the market. He was immediately inspired and devoted all his energy to starting a business.

"We want to do something bold and innovative in the medical field, even though we still can't know exactly what it is," he said. “I quit my job at the time to create Augmedix, and then Pelu joined in from the medical school. We officially established the company in 2012 and started to work slowly.”

Since the two have identified Google Glass as an opportunity, they are imagining how doctors will use AR before the product is officially released. When they don't have Google Glass on hand, they made a model in 3D printing and asked a doctor to wear it during the treatment. "We got the doctor's acceptance, collected the data and tested it. Shakil said the company's current valuation has exceeded $100 million, and nearly 1,000 doctors have established a partnership with Augmedix to use Google Glass during business hours. The company has record crew deployments in India, Sri Lanka, Dominica and the United States.

"This will reshape the doctor-patient interaction, and we still think this is just the beginning. We hope to make healthcare a high-tech platform," Shakil said.
