A research team led by Professor Nan Zhengren from the Department of Gastrointestinal and Pediatric Surgery, Mie University School of Medicine in Japan has successfully designed a system for observing visceral cells in living mice using a laser microscope. The system can observe the details of cancer metastasis in living organisms and the action process of drugs, which is of great significance for the development of new drugs.
In general, laser microscopy can observe the cell activity at a depth of 1 mm on the surface of the living body. However, the uninterrupted heartbeat of the animal can cause vibration of the vascular artery, and the respiratory microscope cannot observe the internal condition of the living organ.
The observation system developed by the Nanzheng research team is to fix the living mice and observe the internal conditions of the mouse organs by using the vibration of the "2 photon laser optical microscope". The research team was inspired by the "anti-shake device" of the camera lens, and the fixed table and microscope of the fixed live mouse were vibrated at the same frequency at the same time to resonate between the mouse and the microscope, so that the mouse was at a standstill relative to the microscope. Therefore, the researchers were able to carefully observe the internal activities of organs such as liver cells and colon cells in living mice.
The research team has used this device to successfully record the metastasis of cancer in living mice from spleen to hepatocytes and the development of ulcerative colitis. Nan Zhengren said that the system can observe the reaction of the sick rats at any time, and can be applied to new drug development and other fields.
