U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists have recently succeeded in cultivating novel miniature watermelon varieties that are crispy, cool, and low in sugar and rich in lycopene and β-carotene. Lycopene is a pigment that causes red color in watermelons and tomatoes, helping to reduce the incidence of certain cancers and strokes. Beta-carotene can be converted into vitamin A in the human body, while vitamin A is beneficial to human eye, bone and reproductive health. The content of lycopene in the new watermelon is 6700-9600 micrograms/100 grams, while the lycopene content in ordinary watermelon is 3700-6900 micrograms/100 grams. The β-carotene content of the new watermelon is 1100-1400 μg/100 g, while the β-carotene content of normal watermelon is 300 μg/100 g. The sugar content of watermelons cultivated by ordinary techniques ranges from 10% to 14%. This kind of watermelon is not suitable for those who are unfit to eat polysaccharides. In contrast, the sugar content of the new watermelon is less than 6%. In addition, the new watermelon is approximately 6 inches in diameter and weighs 3 to 7 pounds. It has no children, and is thin and even inside and out. Therefore, this new type of watermelon is very popular among diabetics.
