Researchers at Boston University are committed to creating wearable devices that detect early signs of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The goal of this three-year research project is to reveal the relationship between the slow mental decline associated with minor physical changes and the disease. At present, it is still difficult to diagnose early clinical Alzheimer's disease.

The incidence of Alzheimer is gradually increasing as the population continues to age. It is estimated that 5.4 million Americans may have Alzheimer's disease. The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease increases with age, although it is not considered a normal phenomenon of aging. If the treatment plan is not found soon, the number of people with the disease in the country may triple by 2050.

As part of the research, Boston University researcher Rhoda Au has provided wearables to 2,200 seniors. Over three years, these devices will track patient balance, heart rate, sleep, cognitive function and risk of falling and other possible medical characteristics.

Currently, people at risk of Alzheimer's disease are sent to experts. However, this often misses the time to help the patient.

Future plans for wearable devices

“It’s really a lot of trouble to bring people into the lab,” Au said at the annual meeting of the AAAS in Boston.

Finally, the researchers plan to port wearable technology to home devices such as Amazon Echo and Google Nest.
This may give you a deeper understanding of which parts of a person's life can cause dementia.

"I admit that we have collected useless data, but I am also sure that we have collected useful data... This is very helpful for us to figure out Alzheimer's disease," said Au.
