Application of metal detector in plastic bag sealing machine

Cornfields is a contract packer that packs a wide range of fast food products, including icing popcorn, fried and baked snack balls, chocolate desserts and squeezed snacks, ranging from 1/2 to 20 ounces in size. Etc., mainly for large multinational fast food and candy companies.

The company uses three vertical forming/filling/sealing machines to package the product. Each machine is equipped with a multi-head electronic scale. The product is weighed and dropped into a vertical forming/filling/sealing machine and packed in plastic bags.

Cornfields installed metal detectors behind the vertical forming/filling/sealing machine to check for any metal debris in the bag. The company selected Lock's inspection system, which meets their requirements for large diameter, stringent inspection equipment. The MET 30+Waferthin detector from Lock is highly sensitive and compact, allowing the detection of very small pieces of stainless steel, enabling Cornfields to meet its own quality control standards as well as customer quality standards.

Cornfields has two vertical forming/filling/sealing machines from Hayssen Packaging Technologies and a vertical forming/filling/sealing machine from Matrix Packaging Machinery. Yamato's multi-head electronics are mounted on top of each vertical forming/filling/sealing machine to weigh the product.

New metal detectors are installed on the three vertical forming/filling/sealing machines. The detector's electronics can be operated either by a small keyboard mounted on the search head or by a separate remote control panel for easy operation.

The Waferthin metal detector, with a 7-inch aperture and a height of only 5 inches, can be easily installed between the discharge slot of the weighing machine and the bagging machine. Its size is a major consideration for Cornfields, as replacing the existing stainless steel funnel adds extra cost and inconvenience, and they don't want to. The Waferthin detector is compact and designed for high-speed integrated packaging system applications, and high-speed integrated packaging systems are becoming more common in the fast food and confectionery industries.

The metal detector's electronics are mounted directly on the detector's search head, either by a small keyboard mounted on the search head or by a separate remote keypad. This saves useful space for electronic scales and bagging machines. It does not require the installation of a housing. It is easy to do when the operator needs to set or adjust the detector settings.

Henry, president of Cornfields, explained: "We have found that it is often the case that metal detection equipment can meet sensitivity requirements but not space or installation requirements." He said: "Lock's Waferthin detector meets our performance specifications. And did not cause big changes to our production line."
