Researchers at the University of Wisconsin have developed a new type of silver dressing that not only has an antibacterial effect, but also avoids damage to surrounding cells. The material is embedded in silver nanoparticles in polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) and the 6.45 square centimeter proton exchange membrane contains only 0.4 silver.
In laboratory tests, low concentrations of silver kill 99.9999% of the bacteria and do not damage the fibroblasts in the wound repair cells. The system is very sensitive, and if the silver content is increased from 0.4% to 1%, the cells will be severely damaged. The study was presented at the American Chemical Society National Conference and Exhibition in Washington, DC, in August 2009.
