Since most cotton bollworms are found inside the bolls of insect-resistant cotton, it is essential to remove and manually destroy them in these fields as soon as possible. In other cotton fields and tomato fields, eggs can be collected by hand during pruning or harvesting. The leftover leaves should then be removed from the field and treated centrally to reduce the population of pests.
Second, apply chemical control at the right time using scientific methods.
Control indicators and procedures:
1. When 10 larvae over three days old are found per 100 plants in insect-resistant cotton fields, immediate pesticide application is required.
2. For non-insect-resistant cotton and other crops, if there are 40 eggs per 100 plants or 100 young larvae, treatment should be done promptly. Suitable pesticides include:
(1) 25% Huifeng Cock Mu at 40ml, or 25% Fast Kill Ling Mu at 50ml, mixed with 70kg of water for spraying.
(2) A 1:1 mixture of chrysanthemum-based and organophosphorus pesticides can also be used for effective control.
3. In vegetable fields, if there are 20–30 eggs per 100 plants, use BT preparations diluted 200 times, 1.8% abamectin diluted 300 times, or 5% Sodium Tetrachloride EC diluted 2500 times for spraying.
Precautions:
1. During the third generation of cotton bollworm control, when the cotton plants are tall, ensure even and thorough spraying. The amount of liquid applied should not be less than 70kg per acre.
2. Spraying should be done before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Avoid spraying during midday to prevent pesticide poisoning and ensure safety for workers.
3. Monitor the effectiveness of the treatment after spraying. If the results are unsatisfactory or if rain occurs within six hours, reapplication should be carried out immediately to maintain control over the pest population.
This integrated approach combining manual removal and timely pesticide application helps reduce the damage caused by cotton bollworms while minimizing environmental impact and ensuring the safety of both crops and farm workers.
