The clinical demand for surgical towels and medical gowns is enormous. After more than 20 years of development, with the continuous development of new materials, the raw materials of surgical towel and medical gown have experienced the development of recyclable cotton materials, polyester fiber materials, and disposable non-woven materials. .

Surgical towel is divided into various specifications and different clinical uses, such as abdominal surgical towel, dental surgical towel, ophthalmic surgical towel, gynecological surgical towel and the like. Medical gowns are divided into: gowns worn by surgeons, patient gowns, visitor gowns worn by outsiders, isolation suits (infectious patients and medical personnel), antistatic gowns, etc. The materials used must have the following properties: 1. Prevent leakage of liquids (such as blood, body fluids or other secretions); 2. Excellent antibacterial properties to block microbial invasion; 3. Anti-friction; 4. Have a certain strength 5. Flame retardancy, because some electric medical devices (such as high-speed rotating drills, etc.) will generate electric sparks. Once the electric spark falls on the surgical towel made of flammable materials, it may cause accidental burning accidents and Burning the patient's body; 6. Antistatic performance; 7. Feel comfortable to wear; 8. Meet the requirements of green environmental protection.

Disposable non-woven fabrics are replacing traditional raw materials
Most of the early surgical and medical gowns were pure cotton products, and their fastness was not high. After repeated washing, the surface of the fabric was prone to sanding and damage, which affected the appearance and safety.

In the late 1980s, polyester fiber textile materials (nylon cloth) rose. In general, surgical towels and medical gowns processed with polyester fiber can withstand more than 150 machine washings, so they can be recycled repeatedly (in fact, foreign hospital surgical towels are discarded only after about 80 times). Save hospital operating costs. Moreover, the appearance of the fabric is smooth, beautiful, durable, and resistant to high temperature sterilization. In addition, the price of polyester fiber material is lower than that of pure cotton fabric. In the early 1990s, almost all surgical towels and medical gowns were made of polyester fiber. Pure cotton fabrics are rarely used.

In the mid-1990s, various disposable medical devices, such as disposable syringes, infusion sets/transfusion sets, disposable Catheters, and disposable Surgical Instruments, quickly occupied the sanitary materials and medical device markets. Compared to recycled medical devices and hygienic materials, disposable products can greatly reduce the risk of cross-contamination in patients in the hospital. The advent of low-cost, soft-feeling polypropylene (PP) nonwoven materials has laid a solid foundation for the production of disposable surgical towels and medical gowns.

Compared with traditional cotton fabrics and polyester fabrics, nonwoven fabrics processed with polypropylene-based materials are superior in performance. The United States is the first country in the world to make surgical and medical gowns from disposable polypropylene nonwovens. At present, the consumption of polypropylene raw materials in the medical and sanitary materials industry is staggering. Frost & Sullivan, a leading international consulting firm, recently revealed in a survey that North American countries, led by the United States and Canada, consumed $1.3 billion of polypropylene nonwovens for processing surgical towels and medical supplies in 2005. Gowns; in 2008, this figure rose to $1.9 billion, which is about 124,000 tons of polypropylene raw materials. Last year, the United States consumed between 1.2 billion and 1.4 billion square meters of non-woven fabrics for processing various medical textiles. More than 95% of hospitals in the United States now use disposable surgical and medical gowns to replace recyclable surgical towels and gowns, while pure cotton surgical gowns are only used in special circumstances.

In contrast, the European market for disposable surgical wipes and medical gowns has been slow to develop. In 2002, the European Union officially announced the quality standard CEN/TC205/WG for medical disposable non-woven surgical towels and medical gowns to regulate the quality standards of medical device manufacturers and importers and exporters in EU countries. In the following five years, the production of disposable non-woven surgical wipes and medical gowns in Europe was accelerated. However, to date, only Germany, the Scandinavian countries (ie the Nordic countries), and the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg have used a large number of disposable surgical towels and medical gowns, while the United Kingdom, France, etc. Polyurethane recyclable surgical and medical gowns are still used in European countries.

It is estimated that the annual sales of disposable surgical towels and medical gowns in Europe are only a few hundred million euros, less than a quarter of North America. In 2007, the proportion of disposable surgical and medical gowns and recyclable surgical towels and gowns in Europe was 5,545; in North America, such as the United States and Canada, the ratio was 928.

New composite non-woven fabrics become a hot spot in the market
It is worth noting that surgical scarves and medical gowns made of new composite non-woven materials are superior in performance to traditional single-layer non-woven materials, and are more comfortable to wear, becoming a new hot spot on the international market. product. This is also an excellent development opportunity for China's medical device industry.

At present, China's Hubei, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong and Guangdong provinces are major exporters of medical non-woven products. Among them, surgical towel produced by materials such as polypropylene + polyethylene composite non-woven fabric, non-woven fabric made by spunbond-melt-spunbonding method, sodium pyrophosphate/polyethylene composite non-woven fabric, etc. The number of exported products such as medical gowns, isolation suits and antistatic suits is up to several million pieces. The export market is not only developed countries in Europe and America, but also developing countries.

A variety of new composite materials for the development of disposable surgical and medical gowns developed by the US medical textile processing industry:

1. Spunbonded polypropylene and spunlace polyester/wood pulp lightweight sandwich new composite fabric material. Its texture is very thin and can be used to make medical hygienic materials such as surgical towels that are not directly or rarely in contact with blood and body fluids.

2. Medium-weight spunbond-melt-spunbonded laminated nonwoven fabric and spunlaced polyester/wood pulp sandwich material. This material is usually 3 to 4 layers and has good gas permeability. It can be used to process medical hygienic materials such as surgical towels that are in light contact with blood or body fluids.

3. A nonwoven fabric made by heavy spunbond-melt-spunbonding. It can be processed into 3~7 layers of multi-layer composite material, which has strong gas permeability, soft and comfortable hand feeling, and can be used to produce sanitary materials such as surgical towels that are directly in contact with blood or body fluids.

4. Coating film composite material. The above three kinds of composite non-woven fabric materials were subjected to surface coating treatment with polyethylene (PE). This coating material prevents blood from penetrating and escaping and is suitable for processing surgical towels.
