Caichunfeng, also known as Chunfengjin, is a variegated form of the Chunfeng plant, which belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. It is considered a variant of Dijin, and it stands out for its unique appearance and growth patterns. The stems are columnar with 3 to 4 distinct edges, featuring sparse, short-tipped protrusions. The outer layer is typically green with yellow-white halos, while the leaves are small and tend to fall off early, giving the impression that the plant is always leafless.
The growth points of Caichunfeng are irregular, often spreading horizontally in a fan-like shape, causing the fleshy stem to twist into a chicken-like or spiral, funnel-shaped structure. The epidermis can display a wide range of colors, including dark purple, milky white, yellow, and various complex patterns such as pleats and stripes. These color variations make Caichunfeng highly unpredictable and visually striking.
This variety is known for its unstable characteristics, and color changes are common during cultivation. For instance, dark purple stems may develop white or yellow patches. In rare cases, a phenomenon called "back ancestry" might occur, where twisted stems revert to a more columnar shape. To maintain its aesthetic appeal, it's important to prune any unwanted growth promptly and clean up any white sap that oozes from the cut areas to avoid unsightly stains.
Caichunfeng thrives in warm, dry, and sunny conditions. It is drought-resistant but prefers slightly shaded areas in summer to avoid sunburn. It does not tolerate cold or excessive moisture, so watering should be carefully managed to prevent root rot. During the growing season, place it in a bright, well-ventilated area, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mist the plant occasionally when the air is dry to enhance humidity and keep the stems vibrant and shiny.
Fertilize once a month with a diluted liquid fertilizer or compound fertilizer, focusing on phosphorus and potassium rather than high nitrogen content, which can cause excessive green growth and reduce ornamental value. In winter, move the plant indoors to a sunny spot. If temperatures remain above 15°C, you can continue regular watering and light feeding. If you want to induce dormancy, reduce watering and allow the plant to rest at around 5°C.
When repotting, do so every 2–3 years using a well-draining mix of soil, coarse sand, and slag, with a small amount of calcareous material like bone meal. Propagation is commonly done through grafting. In spring, early summer, and autumn, cut healthy stems with growing points and graft them onto a stronger host plant. Keep the grafted area in a well-lit, ventilated space without direct sunlight. Avoid getting water on the wound, and wait 7–10 days before resuming normal care.
Caichunfeng is a relatively new succulent introduced in recent years, admired for its elegant lines, rich color variations, and high ornamental value. Though it lacks showy flowers or lush foliage, its unique, stone-like appearance—especially the chicken-crown-like fleshy stems—makes it a standout among decorative plants.
