Scientific Name: Mahonia fortunei
Common Name: Cat's Tail or Cat Sting
Genus: Mahonia
Mahonia fortunei is a hardy evergreen shrub native to the provinces of Sichuan, Tibet, Hubei, and Zhejiang in China. It thrives in warm, humid climates and is known for its resilience to cold and shade. This plant has specific soil requirements, preferring moist, well-drained, and fertile sandy loam. It typically grows to a height of around 2 meters.
The foliage consists of odd-pinnate compound leaves that are narrowly lance-shaped with serrated edges. In autumn, the leaves turn a striking red color, adding visual interest to the landscape. The plant produces axillary racemes of bright yellow flowers from August to October, creating a vibrant display during the late summer and early fall.
After flowering, it develops small, ovate berries that are blue-black in color with a white bloom on the surface. Propagation is commonly done through ramets (vegetative growth), as well as cuttings and seed sowing. Ramet propagation is best carried out between October and November or from February to March of the following year. Cuttings are usually taken in March or during the summer months of June and July. Seed sowing is typically done in December, but seedlings often emerge in March of the next year.
While generally hardy, Mahonia fortunei can be affected by pests such as moths and caterpillars. Despite this, it is a vigorous plant with strong branches and dense foliage, making it an excellent choice for garden borders, hedges, or as a solitary specimen. It also adapts well to container planting, making it versatile for both large and small spaces.
The genus Mahonia includes approximately 50 species, many of which are cultivated. Notable examples include Mahonia bealei and Mahonia japonica, which are commonly found in southern China. Mahonia fortunei stands out for its ornamental value, combining beauty with adaptability, making it a popular choice among gardeners and landscapers.
