Alias: A hundred-foot grass, flat bamboo pole
Family: Asparagaceae (as a possible classification; exact family may vary depending on source).
Genus: Possibly related to the genus *Rhipsalis* or similar epiphytic plants.
Classification: Dicotyledons
Subclass: Not specified in original text
Morphological Characteristics:
This is a perennial, upright herb that can grow between 0.6 to 2 meters tall. The base of the stem is cylindrical and woody, while the upper part has flat, banded stems that are 7 to 12 mm wide. The stems are dark green, shiny, with visible thin lines and slightly contracted nodes. The stipular sheath is reduced to a linear shape, and the branches are narrow at the base with sharp tips.
Leaves are abundant on new shoots, arranged alternately, ovate to oval in shape, ranging from 4 to 20 mm in length and 2 to 10 mm in width. The leaf tip is pointed, the base is wedge-shaped, and the edges are entire or slightly serrated near the base. The venation is pinnate, and the leaves are sessile.
The flowers are small and bisexual, with slender structures. The bracts are tannic and yellowish-brown in color. The perianth consists of 4 to 5 lobes, oblong in shape, about 1 mm long, pale green, turning red later. There are 6 to 7 stamens, with flat filaments and white anthers. The pistil is single, with a superior ovary and short styles that are bifurcated into three parts. The disease-resistant properties are said to be contained within the red endoplasm of the perianth.
Flowering occurs from September to October, and fruiting takes place from October to November.
Origin: Native to the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
Growth Habits: Prefers warm and humid environments, tolerates both full sun and partial shade. It is moderately cold-tolerant and can be cultivated in southern coastal regions of China. It is not particularly demanding in terms of soil conditions.
For potted plants, repotting is recommended every 3 years, usually done in spring. Older plants tend to develop columnar stems with less distinct sections, which reduces their ornamental value. To maintain aesthetics, cuttings can be taken to encourage new growth.
Reproduction is mainly through tender stem cuttings.
Use: Known for its lush, flat stems and bright green color, it has unique shapes that make it visually appealing. It is commonly used as a potted plant in indoor greenhouses for decoration. In warmer climates, it can also be grown in gardens for landscaping purposes.
Harvesting: Can be collected throughout the year, either fresh or dried.
